Every day, people face the decision of how to get from place A to place B. In today’s fast-paced world, the answer is usually mobilizing by car or public motorized transport, which is assumed to be the most efficient option. But, what if we showed you a better way? Our aim is to “build zero-carbon and resilient cities…[by] enabling non-car transportation”. The Steps for Change platform motivates and rewards individuals to embed active travel into daily life, helping people reduce their environmental impact and become healthier. Private cars account for around 10% of global emissions from all sectors (IEA 2023). By driving 1% less, people can reduce their personal carbon footprint by 5-10% - reducing reliance on cars is thus critical to achieve emissions reductions goals. We believe this is attainable since a large proportion of daily trips are short – in the US, over 100 million daily trips are under 1 km in length and (despite being a short walk) more than half are undertaken by car. Steps for Change tackles this challenge by embedding active travel into daily life through a personalised, gamified platform. Using AI-driven recommendations, our platform suggests realistic walking/cycling alternatives based on users' routines, travel patterns, preferences and health status/capabilities. Our solution empowers individuals to drive less, reduce their carbon footprint and improve their health. With a community-driven engagement model, scalable from individuals to cities, we envision our platform as key to drive global behavioural shifts, making zero-carbon mobility the default choice for short trips.
What is your solution?
Every day, people face the decision of how to get from place A to place B. In today’s fast-paced world, the answer is usually mobilizing by car or public motorized transport, which is assumed to be the most efficient option. But, what if we showed you a better way? Our solution is a mobile application that motivates and rewards individuals to integrate active travel into their daily lives, promoting improved environmental and health outcomes. Using geospatial models, machine learning and AI, our platform analyses each person’s unique physical capabilities and context (e.g., walking pace, local infrastructure, weather and health status) to deliver personalised, actionable and efficient recommendations to embed walking/cycling in daily travel. We provide feasible and time-competitive alternatives to help people replace motorised travel modes when undertaking short trips. Steps for Change shows people how they can make small changes to the way they travel by walking and cycling more in their daily lives without setting time aside for exercise. All of this is done while ensuring the complete security and anonymity of your personal information, as we operate within a strict, privacy-focused framework where no personal data leaves the phone.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Steps for Change serves companies that have a legitimate interest in reducing their carbon footprint and improve their employees’ physical health and wellbeing – this should (in theory) be all businesses. In the rush of everyday life, however, it is hard to find simple, actionable ways to make a difference. The frustration lies in how most behaviour change programs expect people to set aside extra time that they simply do not have, or do not think they have. These programs often lack actionable insights on how to achieve goals without disrupting the normal flow of life. Instead of adding another item to their to-do list, like a workout class, Steps for Change meets employees where they are. Using data-driven AI models, we study and understand people’s day-to-day routines and suggests opportunities to replace motorised travel with active modes. We focus on short trips for which walking is feasible and can be a more efficient mode of transport. We provide personalised recommendations that account for daily routines, as well as physical capabilities, environmental context and individual preferences. We give users actionable insights to become more active, creating healthier habits that actually stick—helping users change how they move every day.
