What specific problem are you solving?
According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, over 20 million people in coastal regions lack stable electricity access. The dependence on diesel-powered generators is costly, environmentally damaging, and unsustainable. Natural disasters such as cyclones frequently disrupt energy supply, exacerbating energy insecurity. Traditional wind farms face challenges like high land requirements, noise pollution, and bird fatalities. BD Highway Turbine offers a viable alternative by integrating small-scale, efficient turbines along highways, coastal roads, and waterway routes to generate electricity locally and sustainably.
What is your solution?
BD Highway Turbine Project is a vertical-axis wind turbine that transforms coastal areas and highways into renewable energy sources by using the dynamics of the city. BD Highway Turbine will generate energy by using the winds created by the vehicles as well as the natural winds. This turbine uses the wind pressure generated by the fast-moving vehicles on roads such as big trucks and busses that helps to rotate its blade. BD Highway Turbine will generate energy by using the winds created by the vehicles as well as the natural wind of the sea and river wind. It will also measure the city’s temperature, humidity, wind, and CO2 by using built-in sensors and the IoT platform. The measurements made by BD Highway Turbine will be used on the carbon footprint map to provide the comfort of the city. Also, a mobile app will provide information and data about the generated energy and measurements made by BD Highway Turbine, to whoever needs it.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The BD Highway Turbine project serves communities in Bangladesh, particularly those in coastal and highway-adjacent areas, where stable electricity access is a major challenge. According to the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics, over 20 million people in coastal regions lack reliable power, limiting economic opportunities, education, and essential services. Our solution directly addresses this issue by deploying Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTs) to harness both natural coastal winds and wind energy generated by passing vehicles. This innovative approach provides a continuous and sustainable energy source, reducing dependence on fossil fuels and mitigating carbon emissions.
