Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The United States stands alone among its peers as the only wealthy country in the world without national paid leave, yet decades of research show that paid family leave can be a powerful driver of long-term poverty alleviation. Some of the most significant economic, social, and health benefits for low-income and working-class families include: Financial stability for working families - One study estimated that American workers lost $20.6 billion in wages due to lack of access to paid family and medical leave. Reduced income inequality & gender inequality - Research on paid leave policy, like in California found that making paid leave more broadly available helped lower income groups take more leave and access the financial benefits of paid leave. Improved maternal health outcomes - Paid leave policies support maternal health and well-being by providing time for physical and mental recovery after childbirth. Improved child health & long-term child outcomes - Mothers’ access to leave has a positive impact on their children’s health and development.
