What specific problem are you solving?
Communities across Africa and globally face the impacts of climate change such as rising temperatures, extreme weather, and resource scarcity. These challenges have contributed to energy insecurity and underdevelopment in many under-resourced regions that traditionally have relied on fossil fuels and inefficient grid technologies that lead to unreliable power and water services. From our work, we see that these challenges result in high operational costs, limited access to clean water, and unsustainable agricultural practices (e.g., rain-fed agric). From the articles shared in the MIT challenge, we also see that these challenges directly affect the livelihoods of over 3.6 billion people living in vulnerable conditions globally. In Kenya, inadequate infrastructure and a lack of context-specific sustainable technologies deepen economic and social inequities, which leaves targeted communities less prepared to adapt to a warming climate. Further compounding these issues are multiple factors such as high fuel costs, technological gaps, and insufficient local capacity for maintenance and innovation. Support Nachi in freeing communities in a cycle of environmental degradation and economic hardship.
What is your solution?
Nachi ZeroCarbon offers a portfolio of scalable renewable energy and sustainable technology solutions that shift communities into zero‐carbon, climate‐resilient hubs. Our solutions include community-scale solar PV installations, solar-powered water kiosks, solar water pumps, solar refrigeration systems, retrofitting buildings with energy- and water-efficient technologies, and deploying EV infrastructure for first and last-mile connectivity. We replace costly fossil-fuel systems with clean, reliable alternatives. We use advanced energy monitoring and IoT-enabled controls to optimize performance of our product, while our year-round capacity-building workshops upskills local stakeholders (including technicians in local communities) to source, install, maintain and expand these systems. In the grand scheme of things, we are paving the way for sustainable, locally adapted development by helping communities lower operational energy costs while becoming more resilient to climate extremes, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We primarily target areas in East Africa where energy insecurity and resource scarcity are acute and in those areas serve low-income households, smallholder farmers, local businesses, and public institutions by replacing fossil-fuel–dependent systems with scalable solar and sustainable technologies that are more affordable, reliable and cleaner for the environment. In agriculture, we promote solar-powered water pumps and refrigeration systems to boost crop productivity and improve food preservation. In urban and pere-urban communities, we retrofit buildings, distribute electric bikes and set up EV infrastructure to improve environmental quality and urban mobility. We upskill communities with the technical know-how to maintain and replicate their innovations through town-level capacity-building workshops with local stakeholders and strategic partnerships with clean energy manufacturers.
