Globally, ADHD affects approximately 5–7% of children (Polanczyk et al., 2014), meaning over 129 million children and adolescents live with ADHD worldwide (Thomas et al., 2015). Despite this prevalence, fewer than 20% of affected children in low- and middle-income countries ever receive a formal diagnosis or adequate intervention (Bitta et al., 2017). For example, in Colombia, limited teacher knowledge and misconceptions about ADHD significantly hinder proper identification, resulting in many children being mislabeled as merely disruptive or problematic rather than receiving essential support (Talero-Gutiérrez et al., 2018; Pineda et al., 2014).
A key contributor is the lack of teacher training, culturally appropriate diagnostic tools, and scalable resources, leading educators to feel unequipped to identify and effectively support neurodiverse students (Sherman et al., 2008). Consequently, millions of students experience preventable academic underachievement, heightened risk of mental health issues, and social exclusion (Harpin et al., 2016).
