What specific problem are you solving?
We're solving a global maternal health crisis. Every day, 800 women die and 5,000 babies are stillborn. The WHO estimates that 75–80% of these deaths are preventable with early identification of risk and timely access to appropriate care. Black women are 3x more likely to die during childbirth in the UK, while in low-income countries, the risk is 78 times higher. Maternal suicide is the leading cause of death for new mothers, and postpartum depression affects 1 in 5 women — yet 70% of those with symptoms cannot access treatment. Birth trauma affects 78% of mothers but often goes untreated. Over 50% of mothers that don't receive treatment develop health issues that require medication or hospitalisation — sometimes for up to a decade. This crisis must be addressed now. 67% NHS maternity units in the UK have been rated as unsafe, while 61.5% of women in Sub-Saharan Africa report dissatisfaction with their maternal care. Poor maternity care costs more than lives. In 2014, maternity-related claims accounted for over half of the NHS’s £2.8bn litigation bill — more than the cost of delivering care. The UN has called for a 70% reduction in maternal mortality by 2030 because this is unsustainable.
What is your solution?
MothersPA is an AI-powered app that makes personalised healthcare accessible to every mother, regardless of race, location, or income. Mothers receive personalised guidance based on their medical history, symptoms, self-reported data, and, where possible, real-time integration with electronic patient records. They gain real-time insights into their risks of complications and receive clear next steps to access timely, preventative care. Current WHO and NICE guidelines recommend mothers receive risk assessments at every appointment, but in practice, clinicians don't have time to complete a full risk assessment in every appointment in a busy clinic. The quality also varies by clinician experience and location. Though symptoms account for 70-80% of diagnosis—many mothers feel their symptoms are dismissed. We’re changing that. MothersPA empowers mothers to advocate for themselves, but also makes it easier for clinicians to listen to their symptoms. A clinician dashboard gives clinicians access to patient data and instant risk assessments —enabling early identification of risk and timely care. Accessible on any device, it's useful in low-resource settings. Critically, MothersPA's 24/7 guidance supports mothers when they're most vulnerable, at home. In addition to AI support, they can consult with lactation consultants, pelvic floor therapists, sleep coaches, mental health professionals and more.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves all women who are pregnant or postpartum, with the greatest impact on those often overlooked in existing care models: ethnic minority women, those considered low-risk, and mothers in low-resource settings who receive fewer appointments and less monitoring. In the UK, 600,000 women give birth each year; globally, 134 million. Black women in the UK and US are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications, while the risk is 78 times higher in less developed countries such as Nigeria. A major cause is that these women are not identified as being at risk early enough and therefore miss timely care. MothersPA prevents this by ensuring every mother — regardless of race, income, or location — can access real-time risk assessments on their phone and receive personalised care guidance through the app and/or from their clinician. It also supports women experiencing birth trauma, postpartum depression or mental health challenges who might otherwise go untreated. We also serve clinicians — midwives, GPs, and obstetricians — through a dedicated dashboard for early risk identification of all patients in every setting. This enables timely intervention, reduces preventable harm and maternal deaths, improves safety and patient outcomes, and reduces litigation and healthcare delivery costs.
