What specific problem are you solving?
Adolescents and juvenile offenders have a significantly higher prevalence of mental health issues, often due to concerns about family, education, employability, and uncertainty about life after serving their sentence. As a result, they frequently experience psycho-emotional problems, particularly anxiety and depression (Odgers et al., 2005). For over 10 years, Reinserta has intervened with incarcerated youth and has identified major barriers to addressing mental health in this population. Evidence shows that these adolescents often have complex trauma histories. Reinserta’s 2018 study found that those with higher trauma scores tend to begin offending at a younger age. According to INEGI (2022), while some youth attend psychological therapy, there are very few professionals available (often one psychologist for every 30 youths), many of whom lack proper training. Reinserta provides specialized, professional mental health care tailored to the needs of youth in custody. To address this critical issue, Reinserta created an innovative “Mental Health Radio Program and Workshops for Incarcerated Youth in Mexico,” using technology and youth-led initiatives to approach mental health in an accessible and engaging way. The program currently operates in Mexico City, the State of Mexico, and Nuevo León.
What is your solution?
A comprehensive mental health program that promotes emotional well-being among adolescents in Youth Detention and Social Reintegration Centers across three Mexican states. The program addresses mental health issues like anxiety and depression through a dual approach: psychosocial workshops and psychoeducational podcast production. The psychosocial component includes interactive, group-based workshops led by psychologists trained in cognitive behavioral therapy. These sessions provide safe spaces where participants explore emotions, develop coping skills, and strengthen interpersonal tools vital for reintegration into society. The psychoeducational component engages youth in creating their own mental health-focused radio content. With guidance from psychologists and audio production experts, participants learn to script, record, and edit podcasts. This process equips them with emotional awareness and technical skills, while empowering them to share their experiences and connect with peers through relatable, impactful messages. The podcasts are broadcast within the detention centers, expanding the program’s reach and making mental health content accessible to a broader audience. This innovative, youth-led strategy not only fosters resilience and self-expression but also transforms how mental health is addressed within the juvenile justice system. The grant will support the program’s continuity and scaling, focusing on sustainability and replicability in other regions of Mexico.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves juvenile offenders in Youth Detention and Social Reintegration Centers in Mexico—one of the most vulnerable and overlooked populations within the criminal justice system. Incarcerated youth often experience high levels of trauma, anxiety, and depression, and face significant stigma around seeking mental health support. Through Reinserta’s mental health radio program and workshops, we aim to improve the emotional well-being of at least 65% of participants by reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression, fostering resilience, and encouraging openness to mental health care. Our approach includes both therapeutic workshops and creative podcast production, offering youth the opportunity to understand their emotions, develop coping strategies, and share their voices with their peers inside the centers. The program also works to reduce stigma and shift attitudes toward mental health, creating a more supportive and informed environment. Testimonials from participants and feedback from facilitators are key to evaluating and continuously improving the intervention. Ultimately, our goal is to strengthen individuals and inspire broader systemic change. By empowering youth and investing in their rehabilitation, we help break cycles of violence and contribute to safer, healthier communities impacting not only their lives, but also those of their families and future generations.
