What specific problem are you solving?
Nigeria, home to over 70 million young people under 24, faces a growing crisis in education quality and relevance. Despite being Africa’s most populous country, a recent study by VerivAfrica reveals that 60% of Nigerian-trained graduates lack core problem-solving skills, limiting their ability to thrive in the workplace and contribute meaningfully to society. Public school classrooms are overcrowded, with teacher–student ratios averaging 29:1, and in some states reaching as high as 80:1 (UBEC).
Most teachers work in low-resource environments, using rote methods to teach an outdated, exam-focused curriculum. World Bank (2021) observations show that over 50% of class time is spent on chalkboard copying, leaving little space for critical thinking or ethical reflection.
Nigeria also faces a moral and civic deficit, evident in the normalisation of corruption and highlighted in Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s 2023 op-ed, where public systems, like elections, are undermined by a lack of conscience and character. Yet values-based education is inconsistently applied and often missing in practice.
Millions of Nigerian youth risk graduating without the intellectual or ethical tools to lead, innovate, or build a flourishing society. Addressing this requires character education and a shift toward project-based and inquiry-based pedagogy that fosters both critical and ethical thinking.
What is your solution?
Our solution is a generative AI-powered web application accessible via web browsers and basic Android devices. It generates lesson plans that use inquiry- and project-based pedagogy to integrate character and virtue education across subjects.
Teachers begin by selecting a year group, subject, and the topic they intend to teach. They can either choose a specific character skill or virtue, or allow the AI to suggest one. The app then generates a ready-to-use lesson plan that embeds both the learning objective and the selected or suggested virtue, using either an inquiry-based or project-based approach.
The platform leverages generative AI and natural language processing to create content tailored to Nigerian classrooms, suggesting projects aligned with real-world societal challenges. Teachers also have the option to customise and refine the generated lessons to suit their classroom needs and can easily export the content in any desired format. It is optimised for low-resource and low-bandwidth environments, ensuring that teachers without access to computers can still plan, deliver, and reflect on lessons from their smartphones.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution is designed to serve teachers and secondary school students in Nigeria, particularly those in under-resourced communities where critical thinking and values-based learning are often overlooked. Our initial focus is on public and low-fee private schools, where many teachers manage overcrowded classrooms, limited access to training, and a curriculum rooted in rote memorisation.
We are targeting teachers who need practical, accessible support to deliver engaging, character-infused lessons, without increasing their workload. AIxVirtue Education provides them with lesson plans that integrate virtues like empathy, integrity, and perseverance using inquiry- and project-based learning approaches. For students, this means developing both the reasoning and ethical decision-making skills needed to thrive in life, leadership, and work.
The current reality: Many teachers have not received professional development in over five years, and digital literacy remains low in schools across Nigeria. At the same time, policymakers are beginning to invest in smart schools. Our solution works on basic Android devices, generates culturally relevant, locally grounded content, and offers responsible AI training, ensuring both relevance and reach. Our solution helps shift the classroom from passive instruction to active, ethical, and future-ready learning.
