What specific problem are you solving?
Millions of people worldwide lack access to proper prosthetic care, with 65 million individuals living with amputations and 1.5 million new cases each year. Despite 65% of amputees residing in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), only 5-15% have access to prosthetic devices due to high costs, supply chain inefficiencies, and limited infrastructure. In Africa alone, 3.7 million people require lower-limb prosthetics, yet financial barriers, component shortages, and a lack of P&O (Prosthetics & Orthotics) centers leave many without suitable solutions. Even when prosthetics are available, they are often unreliable, non-repairable, or functionally limited, leading to abandonment. The industry relies heavily on expensive imports, making prosthetics inaccessible to those who need them most. Additionally, there is little focus on sustainability, resulting in excessive waste from obsolete or unused components. Social stigma and limited awareness further isolate amputees, preventing them from seeking rehabilitation and reintegration into society. As demand for prosthetic care is expected to double by 2050 due to rising diabetes cases and road accidents, addressing these challenges is critical to ensuring equitable access to mobility and independence for millions.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the Circleg Prosthetic System, a high-quality, modular, and cost-effective prosthetic leg designed specifically for amputees in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs). It is lightweight, durable, and repairable, ensuring long-term usability while being locally produced to reduce costs and waiting times. However, our solution goes beyond just providing prosthetics. We take a holistic approach to prosthetic care by integrating training programs for prosthetists and orthopedic professionals, enabling them to fit, repair, and maintain our prosthetics within local healthcare systems. We also partner with donors, NGOs, microfinance institutions, and local insurance providers to make prosthetic care more financially accessible. Through our regional hubs, starting with the Circleg African Hub in Nairobi, we enhance local production, quality control, and distribution, improving availability and efficiency. Additionally, we address social stigma and promote empowerment by offering awareness campaigns, peer support networks, and digital platforms that connect amputees to resources, employment, and rehabilitation opportunities. By combining advanced prosthetics technology with local production, professional training, financial solutions, and community support, we create a sustainable, scalable, and comprehensive solution that empowers amputees to regain independence and actively participate in society. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves amputees in low- to middle-income countries (LMICs), where access to affordable and reliable prosthetics is severely limited. These individuals often face significant barriers to mobility, including high costs, long waiting times, and unreliable prosthetic options. By providing high-quality, modular, and locally repairable prosthetics, Circleg empowers users to regain independence and actively participate in their communities. Our prosthetics enable amputees to return to work, education, and social activities, improving their quality of life and promoting economic inclusion. Additionally, our sustainable, circular approach reduces environmental impact while making prosthetic care more accessible and long-lasting. The impact is profound—by increasing access to affordable prosthetics, we break down physical, social, and economic barriers, allowing amputees to regain mobility, dignity, and opportunities for self-determined lives. Ultimately, we aim to create a more inclusive society where amputees can contribute to their communities and reach their full potential.
