What specific problem are you solving?
There are over 70 million deaf people worldwide, and more than 300 different sign languages. Yet, access to structured education, learning resources, and official certification in sign languages remains extremely limited. In Brazil alone, nearly 10 million people experience hearing loss, but only a fraction have access to formal sign language education (Libras), creating barriers to education, employment, and inclusion. Globally, sign language learners, struggle to find consistent, validated content and platforms tailored to their language and context. Traditional resources are often regionally restricted, expensive, or outdated. The lack of standardized and accessible tools also makes it difficult for learners to prove proficiency, limiting opportunities for academic or professional growth. Factors like systemic exclusion, digital inequality, and lack of awareness contribute to this issue. Moreover, most current solutions overlook the value of community, human centered knowledge and cultural nuance within sign languages. Sign Link addresses this gap by offering an inclusive, and accessible platform for learning, practicing, and certifying sign languages, now starting with Brazilian Sign Language and expanding globally. Our solution not only empowers deaf individuals but also strengthens the bridge between deaf and hearing communities.
What is your solution?
Sign Link is an inclusive, digital platform that empowers users to learn, practice, and certify sign languages through a collaborative approach. The app provides interactive lessons, AI-enhanced learning tools, and a dictionary where users can contribute and validate signs in their regional variations. Users can set learning goals, practice with AI-based feedback using their device’s camera, and track their progress toward certifications. The platform includes accessibility and focus in the user first , helping both deaf and hearing users learn effectively. What sets Sign Link apart is its focus on community participation: deaf individuals, educators, and interpreters contribute real-world content, ensuring cultural relevance and linguistic accuracy. In the backend, we use computer vision and machine learning to analyze signs, provide feedback, and personalize the learning experience. Our pilot focuses on Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), with a roadmap to expand globally to other sign languages in collaboration with local communities. We aim to make sign language education affordable, accessible, and engaging, closing the language gap between deaf and hearing communities by providing technological education first.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Sign Link serves deaf individuals, sign language learners, educators, and interpreters, especially those in underserved communities where access to sign language education is limited or nonexistent. In Brazil, for example, despite nearly 10 million people with hearing loss, few have access to structured courses or official certification in Libras (Brazilian Sign Language). Globally, this lack of access affects over 70 million deaf people and millions of others who wish to learn sign languages to foster inclusion. Many deaf individuals face barriers to education and employment due to the absence of inclusive learning tools, while hearing individuals often struggle to find accurate and culturally relevant resources. Educators and interpreters lack platforms that allow them to contribute their expertise and connect with learners at scale. Sign Link addresses these gaps by offering a free and inclusive learning platform, co-created with the community. It provides accessible, region-specific content, interactive learning, and a pathway to official recognition through certifications in multiple sign languages. By empowering users to learn, teach, and validate sign languages collaboratively, we aim to reduce communication barriers, enhance educational and professional opportunities, and strengthen connections between deaf and hearing communities.
