What specific problem are you solving?
Smallholder farmers in Kenya and across East Africa face persistent challenges, including post-harvest losses, limited market access, and price volatility. Up to 30% of grain is lost due to poor storage and pests, while 25% of Kenya’s cereals go to waste annually. Many farmers struggle to reach buyers, with 60% unable to access external markets due to poor infrastructure and market saturation. As a result, only 25% participate in formal trading platforms, leaving the majority at the mercy of middlemen who exploit price fluctuations, often dropping grain values by up to 50% during surplus seasons. Traditional interventions, such as government subsidies, cooperative models, and storage facilities, have had limited impact due to inconsistent implementation, high costs, and logistical constraints. While these efforts have provided temporary relief, they have not fundamentally addressed the structural barriers preventing farmers from accessing stable markets and fair prices, leaving them vulnerable to economic losses and food insecurity.
What is your solution?
Cereal Soko is a digital sourcing and trading platform revolutionizing market access for smallholder farmers by eliminating exploitative middlemen, reducing post-harvest losses, and stabilizing prices. Our proprietary market-matching technology connects farmers directly with bulk buyers, supermarkets, processing companies, and wholesalers, ensuring fair pricing and efficient trade. Through our **Enterprise Sourcing Service**, verified farmers gain structured offtake agreements, securing reliable income while buyers receive a consistent supply of quality produce. We further enhance agricultural transactions with **Cirripay**, a secure digital escrow service that fosters trust and transparency by ensuring payments are held until both parties fulfill their trade obligations. To address surplus management, we integrate barter trade and value addition through **TiGWO**, a high-nutrition flour blend transforming excess grains into profitable products, boosting farmer incomes and food security. Our **E-commerce App** streamlines buying, selling, and bartering, providing real-time price discovery, AI-driven demand forecasting, and trade optimization tools. By digitizing the agricultural supply chain, Cereal Soko empowers over 20,000 farmers across 20 counties, with a vision to scale across East Africa. We are building a **transparent, farmer-first marketplace**, ensuring producers regain control over pricing, secure stable markets, and achieve sustainable profitability in an industry long dominated by unfair practices.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Cereal Soko serves smallholder farmers in Kenya and across sub-Saharan Africa who struggle with surplus sales, fair market access, and post-harvest losses. In Kenya alone, 7.5 million smallholder farmers produce 80% of the country’s food but face challenges in accessing enterprise buyers and securing fair prices. These farmers are often forced to sell at low prices due to market inefficiencies, exploitative middlemen, and limited storage options. Our AI-powered platform directly addresses these challenges by enabling farmers to trade surplus produce at fair market rates through an innovative barter-first model and AI-driven product matching. By connecting them with supermarkets, processors, and wholesalers, we eliminate middlemen and ensure transparent pricing. Our escrow-backed transactions, powered by CiriPay, guarantee secure payments only when quality standards are met, reducing fraud and delayed payments. Additionally, we empower farmers through data-driven clustering, allowing them to form supply groups that enhance their bargaining power and secure better prices for bulk sales. By providing direct market access, secure transactions, and alternative trading options, Cereal Soko improves farmers' incomes, reduces post-harvest losses, and strengthens rural economies.
