What specific problem are you solving?
The department of Cundinamarca, Colombia, with a population of 11.4 million, faces significant climate-related agricultural challenges. Around 24% of its population lives in rural areas, and 84% of municipalities are highly vulnerable to climate change, according to a study conducted by UNDP and the Colombian Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In Chocontá, one of the 116 municipalities, erratic weather conditions such as heavy rainfall and frost have negatively impacted crop yields, leading to food insecurity and economic instability. The specific problem in Chocontá is the reduction in agricultural productivity due to climate impacts, particularly frost and excessive rainfall that damage crops such as potatoes and corn, which are likely to disappear due to a nearly 74% decrease in arable land across the department. This affects more than 100,000 people and creates economic hardship for local farmers. To address this situation, sustainable aquaculture can provide an alternative source of food and income, helping communities diversify their livelihoods. Integrating aquaculture with traditional agriculture can improve climate resilience, reduce dependence on vulnerable crops, and promote sustainable development, ensuring greater food security and economic stability in the region.
What is your solution?
Our solution is based on an automated circular economy in containers for fish and shrimp production. It optimizes water use (RAS), enhances fish growth and utilization, and reduces feed waste. Fish heads, viscera, and scales are used to generate additional income. The technology used includes computer vision, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, and automation to achieve detailed control in the maintenance and upkeep of the system. In addition, a patented REDOX reactor is used to molecularly modify the water, generating a safe environment for fish farming. The REDOX system improves the incubation and growth cycles of fish without the use of chemicals, minimizes mortality, reduces water use, controls diseases, and guarantees product quality. This system reduces the required space (fish per m3) and civil works, saves up to 50% on feed costs, reduces production cycles (up to 5 months), and provides an operating margin of between 30% and 60%. The project's IRR is approximately 60%.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
This project aims to benefit farming families in the rural area of the municipality of Chocontá, who face significant vulnerability due to the damage to their crops and the deterioration of access roads, which are impassable for motorized vehicles due to unpredictable weather conditions, such as heavy rains and frost. These farmers live in a context of limited infrastructure, with difficulties accessing formal labor markets and insufficient resources to improve their living conditions. Currently, they lack viable alternatives to generate stable income, which worsens their economic and social situation. Aquaculture, as a sustainable production model, will allow farming families to obtain profits through the breeding and marketing of aquatic species, taking advantage of the natural resources of their surroundings. By introducing fish farming, the family will have a reliable and profitable alternative to traditional agriculture, while promoting food security and local economic development. The solution will address their immediate needs by providing them with technical training and the necessary resources to build a resilient business that reduces their dependence on irregular weather patterns.
