What specific problem are you solving?
1.6 million immigrants entered America in 2023, each being unfamiliar with the American economic system. Only 47% are fully English literate. Immigrants are then expected to file their taxes at the same level as standard Americans–but surveys show that 79% of U.S. consumers have significant gaps in legal tax knowledge. Due to confusing laws, immigrants often pay more in taxes than the top 1% of wealth in America and often do not redeem tax returns that they deserve because of a lack of tax education and assistance.
What is your solution?
Futr is the first-ever free, online tax assistant designed specifically for immigrants, breaking down financial barriers and promoting tax equality for marginalized communities. Unlike any existing tool, Futr accounts for immigration status and language barriers, ensuring that every immigrant can navigate the complex U.S. tax system with clarity and confidence.
Developed as a comprehensive, AI-powered platform, Futr features an interactive, step-by-step tax filing guide that simplifies the process. The system integrates three advanced AI tools, including an educational assistant that demystifies over 100 tax terms and provides guidance in multiple languages—expanding accessibility by ~142% more than competitors like TurboTax.
Through strategic community engagement and digital marketing efforts, the platform now assists 10,000+ immigrants across the United States from Mexico, India, and China file their taxes every year, accumulating ~$5,000,000/year in income saved by preventing overpayment ($500/immigrant user)—a number that continues to grow.
Beyond individual impact, Futr serves as a scalable solution for systemic change, eliminating financial literacy barriers and ensuring that immigrants are no longer excluded from tax equity. With continued expansion and outreach, Futr is poised to redefine financial accessibility.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
In the immigrant community, finances–specifically taxes–are an incredibly difficult hurdle to get over. Coming from foreign land, immigrants are unfamiliar with the American financial system, and around 50% of immigrants are not fully english literate. Considering only one third of Americans know how to do their taxes, the question must be asked: how can immigrants be asked to do the same, considering these heavy setbacks? Further, institutions nationwide neglect the immigrant community due to societal norms of neglecting those of other races, so there’s no available free help. Any help they could get? Charges exorbitant prices.
The immigrant community is consistently underprivileged in the United States due to widespread social structure. Financially, immigrants are already at a major disadvantage due to language barriers and lack of financial literacy. To add onto this the sheer neglect of the immigrant community by financial aid organizations, political institutions, and private companies, and immigrants get no help. Their finances are neglected, largely because of the difference in race and systemic racial issues, and through Futr, I’m fighting this economic inequity. The tool helps to file yearly, for free, and lets immigrants have confidence in their decisions, and never overpay for taxes.
