What specific problem are you solving?
The traceability system aims to address the lack of a structured, digital mechanism for verifying the origin of coffee produced by smallholder farmers in Kenya, ensuring compliance with the EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR). Currently, smallholder farmers face challenges such as limited documentation, weak supply chain visibility, fragmented record-keeping, and high compliance costs, which put them at risk of exclusion from EU markets. By implementing a comprehensive, tech-enabled traceability platform, the system will provide real-time data collection, digital record-keeping, and compliance tracking, enabling farmers to prove that their coffee is deforestation-free while enhancing their market access and economic sustainability.
What is your solution?
Our traceability solution is a digital platform designed to help Kenyan coffee farmers track and verify their coffee's journey from farm to market, ensuring compliance with EU Deforestation-Free Regulation (EUDR) and other international standards. How It Works Farm Registration – Farmers' land and coffee plots are digitally mapped using GPS technology to confirm their location and compliance with deforestation regulations. Data Collection – Farmers and cooperatives use mobile apps to record planting, harvesting, and sales data in real time. Supply Chain Tracking – Every coffee batch gets a unique digital ID, allowing tracking from the farm, through processing, to export. Verification & Compliance – The system integrates satellite imagery, geospatial analysis, and blockchain technology to ensure tamper-proof records. Reporting & Market Access – Farmers and exporters can generate EUDR-compliant reports, giving them access to European markets. Technology Used The system uses mobile apps, GPS mapping, satellite data, cloud storage, and blockchain to create a transparent, secure, and real-time traceability system that ensures coffee is sourced sustainably and
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution directly benefits over 600,000 smallholder coffee farmers in Kenya, most of whom rely on coffee as their primary source of income. These farmers, often organized into cooperatives, face significant barriers to International standard compliance, including limited access to digital tools, lack of formal land documentation, poor record-keeping systems, and high certification costs. Without a reliable way to prove their coffee is deforestation-free, they risk exclusion from the EU market, threatening their livelihoods. Women and youth in coffee farming are particularly vulnerable, as they have less access to land ownership and financial resources. Our digital traceability platform empowers farmers by providing a simple mobile-based system for recording and verifying coffee production, ensuring compliance with international standards regulations. By leveraging GPS mapping, satellite data, and blockchain-secured records, our solution helps farmers prove their compliance, access better markets, and increase their income. Additionally, training programs will equip them with digital skills, strengthening their participation in global supply chains. This initiative not only secures their economic future but also promotes sustainable farming practices, environmental conservation, and social equity in the coffee sector.
