What specific problem are you solving?
Around the world, 1 in 11 people go hungry every day according to the World Health Organisation. India is a country that faces an acute malnutrition crisis, with about 13.7 % of it's population- nearly 200 million people- undernourished. Despite India's large-scale food production, rural communities, urban slums and disaster affected areas suffer from lack of affordable and nutritious food options.
At the same time. 36.4 million tonnes of Brewer's Spent Grain (BSG)- a nutrient-rich byproduct of beer production- is generated globally every year. Most of it, though, ends up in landfills. This "waste product" is packed with protein, fibre and others nutrients.
Millions go hungry while resources that could alleviate hunger are discarded daily; this represents a critical gap. We are closing this very gap.
What is your solution?
Sustain-a-bite is a nutrition innovation that transforms Brewer’s Spent Grain (BSG) — a protein- and fiber-rich byproduct of beer production — into sustainable, affordable food products.
Step 1: Using a rapid dehydration and milling process, we convert freshly collected BSG from partner breweries into a shelf-stable, nutrient-dense powder, preserving its protein and fiber content.
Step 2: This BSG powder is scientifically formulated with wheat flour to create fortified rotis (Indian breads) using precision blending and batch-processing techniques.
Step 3: The finished products are quality-checked for nutritional value and food safety, packaged, and distributed through local food drives, community kitchens, and humanitarian partners.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
We work with communities where healthy food is often a luxury — migrant workers living in temporary shelters, villagers in drought-prone regions, and families displaced by conflict. These individuals are underserved not because food doesn’t exist, but because it remains inaccessible, unaffordable, or nutritionally inadequate.
Sustain-a-bite addresses these gaps by creating high-protein, fiber-rich rotis (Indian breads), nutrition bars and fortified wheat flour from BSG.
Through food drives, partnerships with eateries, and local distribution networks, we ensure that every bar or packet we produce reaches the hands of someone who needs it most.
