What specific problem are you solving?
We are tackling the urgent matters of climate change, food insecurity, and mismanagement of wastes in Busia County, Kenya. Small-scale farmers and pastoralist communities in the area experience problems with expensive feeds, declining fish catches, unstable energy sources, and inefficient waste management. All these are threats to decreased agricultural production, environmental degradation, and worsening poverty. More than 70% of Kenyans depend on agriculture as a source of livelihood, and small-scale farmers form the backbone of the economy. However, they face the full impact of the consequences of climate change in the form of erratic patterns of rainfall and increasing temperatures. Improper waste disposal also maximizes pollution, which leads to environmental degradation and health risks to the public. Our solution reaches about 10,000 farmers in Busia County and its environs. By adopting sustainable innovations like Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology for waste-to-feed conversion and renewable energy provision, we can lower feed costs, boost agricultural productivity, and alleviate the effects of climate change. It not only improves food safety but also supports environmental conservation, offering a sustainable pathway for smallholder farmers to adapt to a changing climate and transform towards more sustainable farming.
What is your solution?
Our innovation is a fully integrated farming system that uses Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology and renewable energy to drive smallholder agriculture in Kenya. We take in organic waste from farms and households, which is degraded by BSF larvae. The larvae are rich in protein and are eaten as cheap, sustainable animal and fish feed, substituting expensive and unsustainable feeds such as fishmeal and soy. The cycle starts with the gathering of crop waste and food waste that is fed to the BSF larvae. Once the larvae have matured, they are harvested and turned into a nutrient-rich poultry and aquaculture feed. The larvae's waste product, or frass, is a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that enhances soil health for farmers. Along with this waste-to-feed technology, we offer smallholder farmers renewable energy solutions like solar-powered irrigation and fish cage aerators. These cut dependence on costly and unreliable sources of energy, boosting farm productivity and resilience. This strategy gives farmers access to green inputs, lowers feed expenses, increases productivity, and unlocks new revenue streams, while also helping to develop climate resilience and minimizing wastage on the environment
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution directly affects rural smallholder farmers, poultry farmers, and fish cage farmers in Busia County, Kenya. The farmers are under-served because of issues like high costs of feeds, low access to sources of energy that are reliable, and low awareness of sustainable agriculture. They lack adequate resources and are suffering from the effects of climate change, including unpredictable weather patterns and soil erosion. Our integrated solution will benefit these farmers by making available to them affordable, high-quality Black Soldier Fly larvae feed, lowering feed expenses and improving farm productivity. Through the provision of renewable energy alternatives such as solar irrigation and fish cage aerators, we also enable farmers to cut down on their use of costly and unreliable grid power, leading to more cost-effective and efficient farming. We equip farmers with knowledge on climate-resilient farming, waste management, and sustainable agricultural practices through training and education. This enhances not just their incomes but also environmental sustainability in the long run. By minimizing wastage and boosting farm yields, our solution boosts productivity, enhances income levels, and develops climate resilience among poor Kenyan communities.
