What specific problem are you solving?
Teachers are the most influential factor in improving student learning outcomes, yet far too many teachers in India enter classrooms without adequate, subject-specific training and limited – or no – ongoing professional development or coaching to improve their teaching skills, resulting in perpetually poor learning outcomes for students. However, across many historically marginalized communities, providing teachers with high quality, evidence-based, ongoing coaching and resources can be cost-prohibitive for governments. Without adequate resources and support, teachers struggle to effectively support students’ learning – a key reason why in India, only one out of five children can read a story in their own language by the end of Grade 2 (https://chrome-extension://efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj/https://asercentre.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/ASER_2024_Final-Report_25_1_24.pdf).
What is your solution?
Room to Read’s AI-Enabled Teacher Coaching Solution is designed to transform how educators in early grade classrooms receive support. Traditionally, teachers rely on occasional visits from literacy coaches—often just once or twice a month—for feedback and guidance. Our AI tool aims to change that by offering an on-demand, personalized coaching resource accessible anytime. Drawing on RtR’s extensive library of training manuals, guidebooks, videos, and best practices in early literacy instruction, our AI model understands what effective teaching looks like in classrooms. Coaches and teachers can input classroom observations or upload written or video samples of lessons, and the AI will generate high-quality feedback, tailored suggestions, and relevant training materials. Teachers will also be able to interact with the AI via a chat interface to ask questions, clarify doubts, or explore topics in greater depth. By combining rich, contextual inputs with a robust knowledge base, the tool enables real-time, responsive coaching aligned to each teacher’s unique needs and classroom realities. This solution not only enhances the reach and consistency of coaching but also empowers teachers with agency and ongoing professional development—helping them become more confident, effective educators every day.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The solution will increase access to, and improve the quality of, personalized coaching and ongoing professional development to primary school teachers, which are the single most impactful factor within schools influencing student learning outcomes (https://unesdoc.unesco.org/ark:/48223/pf0000388832/PDF/388832eng.pdf.multi). As a low-cost solution, this tool could be scaled to teachers globally in low-resourced contexts who may not have consistent (or any) access to coaching and support to improve how they teach early grade literacy. We aim to benefit (1) Grade 1-2 public school teachers in low-income regions in India; (2) coaches or other trainers, who provide direct support to teachers; and (3) students in Grades 1 and 2, who will benefit from improved teaching practices as a result of the AI tool.
