What specific problem are you solving?
Millions of low-income people – often from BIPOC and immigrant communities – are eligible for government benefits (like food, housing, or internet assistance) but struggle to enroll. Current enrollment processes are convoluted, siloed across agencies, and often only accessible via complex paperwork or online portals that overwhelm those with limited digital literacy. For example, the average Link Health patient lives on less than $22,000 a year, yet over $80 billion in aid goes unclaimed annually. Bureaucratic hurdles, long applications, language barriers, and a lack of awareness prevent many vulnerable individuals from accessing programs that could stabilize their health and finances. Medically underserved patients leaving clinics often have unmet social needs (food, housing, transportation) that directly impact their well-being, but they remain marginalized by an overly complicated system. This gap perpetuates poverty and worsens health disparities, while also straining healthcare providers who see patients’ non-medical needs go unresolved. In short, those who need critical support the most face the highest barriers to getting it, underscoring an urgent need for innovative, scalable solutions to simplify and democratize benefit access.
What is your solution?
Our solution is the Link Health Assistant: a generative AI-powered Agent integrated with a secure benefits-enrollment dashboard. This platform guides patients through applying for state and federal assistance programs using an intuitive, conversational interface. Instead of trudging through confusing forms, users simply answer the chatbot’s questions in plain language (English, Spanish, or other preferred languages). The AI uses natural language processing (NLP) to understand responses and employs optical character recognition (OCR) to pull information from documents like IDs or pay stubs that users can upload or photograph. Behind the scenes, intelligent AI agent workflows auto-fill the necessary forms and either submit them electronically or fax them directly to the appropriate government offices. The accompanying dashboard allows healthcare staff or navigators to monitor each case’s progress, verify submissions, and assist if needed – ensuring a human touch for complex situations. By automating the complex parts of enrollment, the Link Health platform dramatically speeds up the process, reduces errors, and eases the strain on busy clinic staff. It also provides follow-up reminders for benefit renewals to ensure people stay enrolled long-term. Overall, Link Health seamlessly blends AI and human support to make accessing vital benefits as easy as sending a text.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Link Health is designed to serve those most often left behind by traditional systems: low-income individuals (often Medicaid patients) from marginalized communities such as Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and immigrant populations. We focus on medically underserved areas where poverty and social needs are high – for example, communities in Massachusetts, Texas, Illinois, and Oklahoma, where we have built partnerships with clinics. The impact so far has been significant. Through pilot implementations at 13 community health centers, our approach has helped over 3,300 people unlock more than 4.3 million in assistance for needs like food, utilities, and healthcare costs. Importantly, the majority of those enrolled are people of color, reflecting our commitment to health equity. By connecting families to stabilizing resources, we see tangible improvements: patients report less financial stress and a better ability to afford medications and healthy food. Our collaboration with community clinics and state benefit agencies ensures we reach those in need through trusted channels at the point of care. Moreover, we adhere to ethical AI design principles – providing multilingual support, safeguarding privacy by securing data handling and consent, and using a compassionate, trauma-informed approach – so that the technology is inclusive and empowering for the communities we serve.
