What specific problem are you solving?
Coastal erosion, accelerated by climate change, is an escalating threat to communities worldwide. Rising sea levels and more frequent, intense storms are driving rapid shoreline retreats, putting homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods at increasing risk. As natural barriers such as dunes, wetlands, and reefs disappear, the vulnerability to flooding and storm surges grows, bringing long-term social, economic, and environmental consequences. With 10% of the global population living in low-lying coastal areas and over $1 trillion in U.S. property located within 700 feet of the coastline, localized risk assessments and mitigation strategies are critical. Yet, many communities, from the U.S. and Southern Europe to the Pacific Islands, lack access to the high-resolution, localized data needed to make informed decisions about adaptation. Whether considering engineered solutions like seawalls or nature-based approaches like mangrove restoration, these decisions require an understanding of both historical shoreline trends and future projections. Limited technical resources, capital constraints, and unequal access to data leave many communities unprepared to assess risks or prioritize interventions. Without the tools to forecast future changes or evaluate the impact of potential defenses, decision-makers struggle to protect their coastlines—and their futures.
What is your solution?
Ocean Ledger bridges the critical data gap faced by coastal communities by forecasting localized shoreline and environmental changes over time and space. Leveraging satellite imagery, machine learning, and site-level data, our platform delivers 13 proprietary data products, ranging from natural capital accounting to coastal erosion analytics, that offer unmatched accuracy, granularity, and usability compared to traditional global datasets (when available). This empowers coastal developers, environmental engineers, and NGOs to assess risks, evaluate interventions, and make evidence-based decisions with confidence. At the core of our solution is an interactive, in-house-built dashboard that provides seamless access to high-resolution, nearshore insights anywhere in the world. Clients can explore their project with contextualized baselines of natural habitat and erosion, run scenario analyses, forecast future changes, and access asset-level risk assessments and coastal risk models that incorporate both natural and engineered defenses. Beyond data, Ocean Ledger supports on-the-ground impact by integrating nature-based solutions into its framework. By highlighting the role of restored wetlands, dunes, and mangroves in reducing risk and supporting biodiversity, we help communities strengthen their coastal resilience, protecting lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems alike.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Ocean Ledger empowers coastal developers and NGOs to improve the lives and long-term resilience of coastal communities facing the growing threat of erosion, sea-level rise, and habitat loss. Coastal developers play a vital role in shaping safer, more sustainable coastlines. By equipping them with high-resolution, localized environmental data, Ocean Ledger enables these firms to design infrastructure that proactively protects vulnerable communities. With faster, more accurate risk assessments, developers can prioritize interventions where they are most needed such as building resilient ports, flood defenses, and coastal systems that mitigate environmental hazards while complying with environmental regulations. NGOs, focused on climate resilience, disaster relief, and ecosystem restoration, use Ocean Ledger to drive policy advocacy, target habitat restoration efforts, and mobilize local engagement. Our insights allow them to identify high-risk areas, guide rehabilitation of natural defenses like mangroves and dunes, and measure project impact over time. For example, our work has supported a mangrove restoration project that trained and employed local villagers in Kenya, enhancing both ecological literacy and economic resilience. These restored habitats now shield communities from storm surges and contribute to long-term carbon sequestration, advancing both environmental and social outcomes.
