What specific problem are you solving?
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with over 220 million people, faces significant gaps in gifted education and digital literacy. While federal initiatives exist, including the Federal Government Academy in Suleja and the School for the Gifted in Gwagwalada, their combined capacity serves fewer than 2,000 students nationwide. State-led gifted education programs are uncommon or largely absent, leaving the vast majority of Nigeria’s estimated 40 million public school students without access to specialized education. Additionally, most public schools in underserved communities lack functional computer labs, meaning more than 90% of students graduate without basic digital skills. This digital divide critically impacts students, especially since Nigeria's sole university entrance exam (UTME) is computer-based, further disadvantaging underserved youth. Consequently, gifted students from marginalized communities often remain unidentified and unsupported, resulting in wasted potential, perpetuated inequality, and lost opportunities for socioeconomic growth. Expanding access to gifted education and digital literacy programs is essential to leveraging Nigeria’s human capital, promoting equitable economic development, and fostering national innovation.
What is your solution?
We have developed Smartbanc, a gamified digital learning platform to deliver gifted education and digital literacy to underserved Nigerian communities. Smartbanc for Students provides engaging, localized, AI-driven educational content through trivia challenges, quizzes, and interactive anagrams. Students earn credits from these learning activities, contributing to their school's leaderboard ranking. At the end of each school term, the highest-ranking schools receive prizes, encouraging healthy competition and continuous learning. Educators use Smartbanc to track student progress in real-time, evaluate performance, and identify exceptional learners for specialized training and scholarship opportunities. Smartbanc for Investors is a philanthropic platform enabling supporters to purchase tokens through subscriptions or earn them by completing surveys. Investors use tokens to access gamified learning activities, earning credits they can redeem to enter raffle draws for prizes. Subscription revenue provides sustainable funding for scholarships, digital infrastructure, and educational resources for students.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution, Smartbanc, is designed for public school students aged 9 to 18 in underserved communities across Nigeria. Smartbanc for Students provides engaging, gamified learning experiences powered by a localized, AI-driven curriculum that supports gifted education and digital literacy. Educators also use Smartbanc to deliver personalized instruction, track academic progress, and identify high-performing learners for specialized training and scholarship opportunities. The platform addresses major gaps in access to advanced learning opportunities and technology in public schools, where most students graduate without ever using a computer. By equipping both students and educators with tools for high-quality, interactive education, Smartbanc enhances learning outcomes and builds essential 21st-century skills.
