Mediflow AI Trainer

Team Leader
Wendy Bayer
Mediflow AI is a smart digital assistant that helps hospitals manage medical oxygen systems more effectively. It uses artificial intelligence and real-time data to monitor oxygen usage, predict system failures, and guide healthcare workers in safe oxygen delivery. The system works through five core modules: 1. Oxygen Infrastructure Mapping – digitizes the hospital’s oxygen equipment layout and usage points. 2....

What specific problem are you solving?
Health facilities in low- and middle-income countries face persistent oxygen system failures due to poor infrastructure visibility, lack of predictive maintenance, limited clinical training, and fragmented data. Up to 60% of oxygen systems in African hospitals are non-functional or poorly maintained. Many facilities lack digital tools to track oxygen usage, detect system faults, or train staff in oxygen therapy protocols. During COVID-19, oxygen shortages contributed to preventable deaths, especially in facilities without the capacity to monitor demand or respond to surges. Globally, over 500,000 people need medical oxygen daily. Yet, hospitals in resource-limited settings often lack essential planning tools, timely equipment servicing, and data to guide clinical decisions. Contributing factors include absence of IoT-enabled tracking, workforce shortages, low digital literacy, and underinvestment in infrastructure lifecycle management. Oxygen-related deaths remain underreported due to missing patient-level oxygen usage data and lack of integration with health information systems. These systemic issues continue to affect maternal, neonatal, emergency, and pandemic response care across Southern Africa and similar regions.
What is your solution?
Mediflow AI is a smart digital assistant that helps hospitals manage medical oxygen systems more effectively. It uses artificial intelligence and real-time data to monitor oxygen usage, predict system failures, and guide healthcare workers in safe oxygen delivery. The system works through five core modules: 1. Oxygen Infrastructure Mapping – digitizes the hospital’s oxygen equipment layout and usage points. 2. Predictive Maintenance – uses IoT sensors and AI to forecast breakdowns and alert staff before failure happens. 3. Clinical Task Assistant – gives real-time guidance to nurses and doctors on oxygen flow rates, equipment use, and patient safety. 4. Emergency Readiness – identifies risks and helps plan for oxygen surges, especially during pandemics or critical incidents. 5. AI Training Hub – transforms WHO clinical guidelines into interactive training that adapts to each user’s skill level. Mediflow AI can be accessed through mobile devices, tablets, or hospital computers. It is currently in prototype phase, being developed with CSIR, Turntec, and Enfint for pilot rollout in 2025. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Mediflow AI serves healthcare workers, hospital administrators, and critically ill patients in underserved and low-resource health facilities — especially in rural and peri-urban areas across Southern Africa. These facilities often lack real-time monitoring, skilled personnel, and reliable data to manage oxygen supply. Nurses must manually guess oxygen flow levels. Technicians respond reactively to equipment failures. Administrators lack the data to plan ahead or report accurately. Patients — including newborns, trauma victims, and mothers in distress — suffer from avoidable delays or complications due to oxygen mismanagement. Mediflow AI directly improves their lives by: • Guiding frontline staff with step-by-step clinical instructions during oxygen therapy. • Alerting technicians before system failures occur. • Forecasting oxygen demand and usage to prevent critical shortages. • Supporting ongoing training with AI-powered modules adapted to local skill levels. By turning fragmented systems into an integrated smart dashboard, Mediflow AI empowers overburdened health workers to make better decisions and provide safer care — while ensuring oxygen reaches the patients who need it most, when they need it.
