What specific problem are you solving?
Laheq Halak addresses the twin crises of food waste and food insecurity in Palestine. In local communities, over 46% of total solid waste is organic, much of it edible food discarded by vendors due to lack of efficient redistribution channels. Meanwhile, 34% of Palestinians face food insecurity—this rises to 80% in Gaza—creating an urgent need for affordable food access. Rising food prices (up 17% from 2022 to 2023) and high unemployment (35% in the West Bank, 80% in Gaza) have significantly reduced consumption. Vendors, especially small businesses, lose income on unsold perishable goods, while struggling families cannot afford nutritious meals. This systemic disconnect between surplus and need contributes to economic instability and environmental harm through increased CO₂ emissions from landfill waste. Globally, one-third of all food is wasted while 828 million people suffer from hunger. Laheq Halak’s solution creates a digital bridge between surplus and demand, aiming to reduce waste, improve food access, and promote environmental sustainability—starting in Palestine and scalable across MENA.
What is your solution?
Laheq Halak is a mobile application that connects local vendors with surplus or near-expiry food to consumers looking for affordable, high-quality meals. It allows vendors—such as bakeries, fruit shops, and supermarkets—to list unsold food items in real-time through a simple dashboard. Consumers can browse discounted products nearby and purchase them directly through the app. It includes features like freshness indicators (e.g., ripeness level for produce), donation options for charities, and gamified elements that reward users for reducing waste. Both vendors and consumers can track their positive impact, such as food saved or money earned. Laheq Halak not only helps reduce food waste but also promotes sustainable behaviors and improves food access in underserved communities.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Laheq Halak serves two key target populations in Palestine: local food vendors and low-to-middle-income consumers. Vendors—such as bakeries, supermarkets, fruit and vegetable sellers, and restaurants—often struggle with financial losses from unsold food. Without proper redistribution channels, surplus food is discarded, increasing waste and operating costs. On the other side, many consumers face rising food prices, limited income, and food insecurity, with over 34% of Palestinians experiencing food insecurity and poverty levels rising due to economic instability. Laheq Halak provides a digital solution that allows vendors to profit from surplus or near-expiry items, reduce waste, and expand their customer base. Consumers gain access to fresh, nutritious food at significantly discounted prices, improving food accessibility and affordability. The app also includes donation features to support community organizations and allows both groups to track their environmental and economic impact. By bridging this gap, Laheq Halak empowers vendors, supports families, and fosters a more sustainable, inclusive food system.
