What specific problem are you solving?
Globally, many students face significant challenges in mathematics education. According to the World Bank, approximately 60% of 15-year-old students in low-income countries cannot achieve basic proficiency in mathematics, highlighting a devastating global educational crisis. In the United States, the National Assessment of Educational Progress reports that in 2024, only 27% of eighth-grade public school students performed at or above the "Proficient" level in mathematics, further emphasizing the need for intervention. Teachers often work with limited resources, and many educational systems struggle to meet the diverse needs of students. As a result, student engagement and academic success in math continue to decline. .
What is your solution?
Curiosity Games: Project Mars is an advanced digital and VR learning environment that enhances middle and high school students’ understanding of mathematics, including Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry. Set in a Mars simulation, students engage in hands-on activities and math exercises aligned with the 5E Model. The platform uses the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT)—an AI-based system that adapts instruction in real time based on student behavior. Teachers receive real-time insights and alerts, allowing them to focus their efforts on students who need the most support—reducing the overall amount of intervention required. Students follow a structured learning progression: 1. Math Conceptual Exercises (Engage/Explore) 2. Apply Arithmetic (Explain/Elaborate) 3. Test Questions (Evaluate) 4. Hands-on Activities (Elaborate) As they progress, students earn Curiosity Bucks. In the final multiplayer Mars simulation, they use these credits to collaborate and build a civilization—reinforcing real-world STEM skills through game based learning. The game can be played in class or at home, making it ideal for student-led blended learning. Currently in prototype, undergoing a Tier 4 ESSA-aligned study with Johns Hopkins School of Education Research and Reform. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The target population consists of middle and high school students, particularly those from under-served, low-income, and diverse backgrounds, including students at Title 1 schools. These students face significant challenges such as limited access to quality educational resources, insufficient individualized support, and a lack of engaging learning experiences. Many struggle with low motivation and confidence in mathematics, leading to disengagement, academic under-performance, and limited STEM opportunities. Current educational systems often fail to meet these students' needs, with overcrowded classrooms, outdated resources, and one-size-fits-all teaching methods. As a result, students fall behind in math, contributing to widening achievement gaps both in the U.S. and globally. Curiosity Games: Project Mars offers a solution by providing an immersive, game-based learning platform that uses evidence-based math practices. The platform combines real-world math skills with engaging, interactive lessons designed to cater to diverse learning styles. Through the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring (GIFT), Curiosity Games provides real-time feedback and personalized instruction, helping students master key concepts at their own pace. By increasing student engagement, motivation, and accessibility, this solution addresses educational gaps, utilizes effective math strategies, and boosts academic outcomes, preparing students for success in mathematics and future STEM careers.
