Concept Loop's solution, EcoGrete™, transforms low-value plastic waste, particularly multi-layer plastics (MLP), into a hybrid plastic aggregate used in construction materials. Essentially, we collect MLP waste from industrial and consumer sources, then process it through cleaning, sorting, and refining. This waste is then converted into EcoGrete™ using an agglomeration machine (which shrinks and adds minerals and additives to enhance properties)...

What specific problem are you solving?
We are tackling the challenge of plastic waste management, specifically targeting multi-layer plastic (MLP) waste, which is notoriously difficult to recycle. MLPs, including single-use food packaging and flexible films, often end up in landfills, oceans, incinerators or contaminate recycling streams. This not only harms the environment but also represents a lost opportunity to recover valuable resources. Our innovative solution, EcoGrete™, transforms MLP waste into a sustainable construction material, reducing reliance on virgin materials and contributing to a circular economy. This approach addresses the critical issue of plastic pollution and offers a more environmentally friendly alternative for the construction industry. The scale of the problem is significant. Globally, over 380 million tons of plastic waste are generated annually, with MLPs accounting for a substantial portion. In Karachi alone, where Concept Loop operates, plastic waste generation is estimated at around 5,000 tons per day. This waste not only pollutes the environment but also poses health risks to communities. By collaborating with corporations and promoting sustainable practices, Concept Loop aims to make a significant impact on plastic waste management and contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable future.
What is your solution?
Concept Loop's solution, EcoGrete™, transforms low-value plastic waste, particularly multi-layer plastics (MLP), into a hybrid plastic aggregate used in construction materials. Essentially, we collect MLP waste from industrial and consumer sources, then process it through cleaning, sorting, and refining. This waste is then converted into EcoGrete™ using an agglomeration machine (which shrinks and adds minerals and additives to enhance properties) and an extrusion machine (which melts and lumps the plastic). Finally, a crusher granulates it into EcoGrete™ granules. These granules are then blended with concrete ingredients to manufacture durable construction products like pavers, blocks, and tiles. This process diverts plastic from landfills, reduces carbon emissions, and creates sustainable building materials. We also offer services like Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Plastic Recovery Notes (PRN) to help businesses manage their plastic waste responsibly.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Concept Loop's solution serves multiple stakeholders, each with unique needs and benefits: 1. Communities: We reduce plastic pollution, improving sanitation and health, especially in underserved areas where waste management is lacking. By preventing open burning and landfill overflow, we mitigate toxic pollutants and microplastic contamination, enhancing overall quality of life. 2. Waste Workers: We formalize the informal waste sector, providing fair wages, improved working conditions, and training. This empowers them economically and socially, addressing issues like undocumented labour and child labour. 3. Businesses: We offer sustainable waste management solutions (EPR, PRN), helping them meet environmental regulations and reduce their plastic footprint. This enhances their brand image and corporate responsibility. 4. Construction Industry: We provide EcoGrete™, a sustainable and durable alternative to traditional aggregates. This reduces their environmental impact and offers cost-effective, high-performance building materials. By addressing plastic waste and promoting circularity, we create a positive ripple effect, benefiting diverse groups and driving sustainable development.
