What specific problem are you solving?
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with over 200 million people, is at a crossroads regarding digital equity and inclusive education. Despite the growing global demand for digital skills, less than 1% of Nigerian schools offer computer science education(https://pdfs.semanticscholar.org/7b20/3ec4058b80d6025f4a04a48a34eaf7db333e.pdf), leaving millions of children, especially in rural and underserved communities like Oreta, locked out of the digital future. This lack of access is not just about devices or internet connectivity; it reflects a wider systemic gap in opportunity: few trained educators, unsustainable curricula, and scarce infrastructure. Without early exposure to digital literacy and coding, children in these communities are often left behind, reinforcing cycles of poverty and inequality. Some turn to harmful alternatives like online fraud, not out of choice but due to a lack of viable options. Yet, this challenge is also a powerful opportunity. Equipping these children with coding skills and computational thinking can unlock untapped potential, fuel local innovation, and build a more inclusive digital economy. The time to invest in community-driven, scalable solutions that bridge the digital divide is now because when one region thrives, we all benefit.
What is your solution?
Code Equity is a scalable, inclusive solution designed to bring computer science education to under-resourced schools and communities in Nigeria, particularly those without reliable access to technology or digital infrastructure. Offline-First Curriculum: Our curriculum works without internet access, making it accessible even in the most remote areas. It’s a plug-and-play solution that allows teachers with little or no previous experience in tech to teach coding through structured lesson plans, interactive exercises, and unplugged activities. Teacher Training: We provide comprehensive training programs that equip educators with the skills they need to teach coding and computer science effectively. This ensures sustainable, high-quality education and builds local capacity within communities. Low-Bandwidth Platform: We’re developing a web platform where teachers can download lessons, track student progress, and access additional resources to enhance learning, all without the need for high-speed internet. In the future, we aim to launch a mobile app that enables students to engage in coding activities and challenges, even when internet access is sporadic. Code Equity removes barriers to digital education, empowering both students and teachers, ensuring equitable access to technology education across Nigeria.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
The target population for Code Equity consists of underserved children in Nigeria, particularly in marginalized communities like Oreta, where access to quality education, especially in digital skills, is virtually nonexistent. In these areas, only 1% of schools offer coding education, leaving children without the essential tech skills needed to succeed in the digital economy. By equipping children with foundational coding skills, Code Equity opens doors to new opportunities, allowing them to compete in the global job market and create a brighter future. Our goal is to expand the reach of coding education, targeting at least 10% of schools in Nigeria within the next five years, significantly improving access to digital learning and empowering underserved youth across the country.
