What specific problem are you solving?
We are solving the problem of biofouling, the unwanted accumulation of organisms on submerged structures. Biofouling significantly reduces operational efficiency, increases fuel consumption, maintenance frequency, and greenhouse gas emissions. According to the IMO, fouling can increase fuel up to 8%, on propellers for example it affects its efficiency 5-7%, contributing to millions of tonnes of CO2 emissions annually. The global cost of biofouling is estimated at billions of euros yearly, affecting the maritime, energy or aquaculture industries. Traditional biofouling methods rely on biocidal paints or metal leaching, which release harmful substances into the enviroment and require frequent reapplication. These solutions compromise marine biodiversity and do not align with long-term enviromental regulations such as the EU Green Deal or UN SDGs. Our solution addresses this with a non-toxic, maintenance-free antifouling system that uses titanium surfaces and electrochemistry to prevent biofouling without releasing pollutants. We reduce emissions, protect marine ecosystems, and improving the circularity and durability of industrial infrastructure.
What is your solution?
We have developed a patented, non-toxic antifouling system that uses electrochemistry applied to titanium surfaces to prevent the growth of biological organisms on submerged structures such as propellers, pipes, and seawater intake systems. Unlike traditional antifouling methods that rely on chemical coatings or toxic metal leaching, our system is maintenance-free and completely safe for marine ecosystems. The technology works by applying controlled electrical signal between titanium surfaces and surrounding structures. This alters the local electrochemical enviroment, creating conditions that prevent the adhesion and growth of biofouling organisms such as algae, barnacles, and mollusks. The solution can be integrated into new components or retrofitted onto existing infraestructures using different methods and electronic control units. It is highly durable and its effectiveness has been validated through multi-year field testing in the Mediterranean and North Sea. With zero emissions, no chemical release, and no impact on non-target species, Titanium Technology offers a truly sustainable and scalable solution for biofouling prevention in maritime, energy, and industrial sectors.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves companies operating submerged infrastrucuture in maritime, energy, aquaculture, desalination and industrial sectors. These stakeholders face constant operational challenges caused by biofouling: increased fuel consumption, unplanned maintenance, reduced efficiency, and high enviromental compliance costs. Small and mid-sized companies are more affected, as they often lack the resources for frequent maintenance or to adopt greener alternatives. Many rely on toxic antifouling paints, which offer only temporary relief and contribute to enviromental degradation. Titanium Technology provides a sustainable, maintenance-free alternative that eliminates these burdens. By preventing biofouling without harmful chemicals or constant upkeep, we help reduce fuel use, operating costs, and CO2 emissions. Our solution also increases the lifespan and reliability of submerged equipment, directly impacting the profitability and sustainability of our clients. In the long term, our technology supports broader goals by reducing marine pollution, improving energy efficiency, benefiting both industry stakeholders and coastal communities and marine ecosystems.
