What specific problem are you solving?
Mental health is one of America’s biggest challenges, and the numbers tell a heartbreaking story. In 2023, 58.7 million Americans- 22.8% of the U.S. population, experienced a mental illness, with young adults suffering the most (33.8%). Worse, in the same year, the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek H. Murthy declared loneliness an epidemic. Half of American young adults had reported experiences of loneliness, exacerbated by social media (70% cite tech as a driver), even before the outbreak.
This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about real lives being disrupted by modern life’s pace and distractions. Loneliness and mental health feed into each other: isolation worsens mental health, and declining mental health deepens isolation.
The crazy thing is everyone is aware of the problem. As young adults, we all know that we are constantly drowning in the modern lifestyle and have lost connection with ourselves. But current solutions like therapy or medication are misaligned, stigmatized, and remain inaccessible (40% of Americans can’t afford care). At Inward, we believe these solutions don’t address the root of the problem anyway. We have experienced it ourselves and have heard our friends calling for help. We demand better.
What is your solution?
We believe the solution to mental health and loneliness in young adults isn’t about seeking external help—it’s about finding strength within. Inward Notebook 1 is a handheld E-ink electronic tablet with a built-in artificial intelligence agent that acts as a pen pal. In this form factor, we aim to create a unique, world-class software experience for one goal only: creating a safe and fulfilling inward journey for young adults who desperately need it.
The experience starts with journaling. Users write with a stylus and the E-ink tablet, creating a space that feels as natural as pen and paper. From there, the AI pen pal steps in, offering personalized feedback tailored to each user’s thoughts and emotions. It doesn’t stop at responses—the pen pal organizes journal entries, identifies patterns, and surfaces meaningful insights that foster self-awareness and growth. At the same time, the pen pal acts as a supportive friend, giving young adults a shoulder to lean on in the growing process. With Notebook 1, we provide an environment young adults no longer have access to: a safe place to process their emotions and thoughts and build a stronger sense of self and mental health.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Plenty of research shows that identity and purpose are the main drivers of fulfillment and happiness. But for young adults, figuring out who we are and what we want is rarely taught or supported in a systematic and meaningful way. Instead, technology, social media, and economic pressures make it harder than ever to connect with ourselves. At Inward, we are addressing mental health and loneliness at the very core for young adults aged 18-30 in America. We cut out all the noise, help young adults learn who they are, and empower them to become who they want to be. A piece of (electronic) paper, a pen, and a supportive friend on the journey.
