What specific problem are you solving?
Globally, millions of high school students, particularly from low-income communities, face systemic barriers to academic support that hinder their chances of accessing higher education. In the United States, over 50% of public school students come from low-income families yet many attend schools unable to offer specialized courses like AP Economics or AP Calculus. Even in classroom settings, overcrowding is a persistent issue; for example, in Türkiye, it is common for a single teacher to manage 40 or more students, making it nearly impossible to address individual questions or support personalized learning. As a result, students with high aspirations are left with limited or no opportunity to ask questions, clear misunderstandings, or receive feedback: the critical elements for mastering difficult multiple-choice questions and succeeding in university entrance exams. Private tutoring, often seen as a solution, is unaffordable for most, with costs ranging from $60 to $233 per hour. This creates a global gap in educational equity where ambition is not matched with access; making the escape from poverty nearly impossible.
What is your solution?
We are developing MindMentor, an AI-powered learning assistant that delivers personalized, high-quality exam preparation to students anywhere, regardless of income or access to tutoring. While most educational tools simply explain answers or highlight key facts, MindMentor simulates the experience of working with a skilled teacher by engaging students in real, one-on-one, question-based dialogue. For each multiple-choice question, MindMentor does not give the answer. Instead, it asks a single, targeted follow-up question to reveal the student’s thought process and uncover where their understanding breaks down. From there, it continues the conversation one question at a time, guiding the student step by step toward the correct reasoning and connecting concepts along the way. This approach not only corrects misconceptions at the source but builds lasting problem-solving skills and deep comprehension. Its strength lies in its ability to diagnose individual learning gaps in real time, transforming passive study into active mastery. By turning every question into a personalized micro-lesson, MindMentor empowers students to think critically, learn independently, and succeed in even the most competitive academic environments.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution is designed for high school students who are highly motivated but systematically underserved—particularly those from under-resourced schools and low-income backgrounds preparing for competitive university entrance exams like the APs. These students often dream of a better future but face an uneven playing field. While their peers may have access to private tutoring, small classrooms, and exam prep resources, they are left to navigate complex material alone, without feedback or guidance. MindMentor bridges that gap by providing a free, AI-powered learning companion that offers the kind of personalized, one-on-one support typically reserved for those who can afford private tutoring. It adapts to each student’s unique needs, offering targeted support precisely where they struggle, and empowering them to turn frustration into progress. For students who have long been excluded from equal opportunity, it replaces silence with support, isolation with mentorship, and self-doubt with a growing sense of capability. By unlocking access to high-quality, interactive learning—anytime, anywhere—MindMentor gives underserved students not just a fair shot, but a fighting chance to shape their future through education.
