What specific problem are you solving?
Access to timely imaging as support to medical diagnosis remains one of the greatest barriers to quality healthcare in rural and underserved areas. In Peru alone, over 7 million people live in remote regions where access to ultrasound is scarce or nonexistent, contributing to delays in diagnosis, maternal and neonatal complications, abdominal complications and preventable deaths. Globally, the WHO estimates that over 60% of the world's population lacks access to basic imaging services, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).
This lack of access is due to multiple factors: the absence of specialists in rural zones, limited infrastructure for imaging equipment, and fragmented referral systems, create a significant barrier to timely imaging diagnoses.
What is your solution?
We developed an innovative Asynchronous Tele-Ultrasound solution designed to address the lack of specialists in rural and remote healthcare centers. Unlike traditional tele-ultrasound systems, our solution does not require a specialist at the site or a live remote connection during the imaging process. Instead, local health personnel—such as general practitioners, nurses, or midwives—can acquire images following a simple volumetric protocol after just a few hours of training.
1- Using our smart solution interface, users are guided through image acquisition in an intuitive, user-friendly process, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
2- The acquired ultrasound images are compressed and encrypted for secure transmission, requiring minimal bandwidth, and are later uploaded to our secure cloud platform where remote specialists review and interpret them.
3- Specialists located in larger hospitals or urban centers can then review the studies and generate medical reports remotely which returns to the primary health care.
Through this model, patients in remote areas can receive timely imaging diagnosis results without needing to travel long distances or wait weeks for appointments.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our solution serves rural and underserved populations in Peru—particularly women, children, and Indigenous communities—who face systemic barriers to timely imaging diagnostic care. This is particularly relevant in remote regions such as the Andes and the Amazon, where there is an inequitable distribution of specialists, hindering access to timely imaging diagnoses. This lack of equipment and specialists leads to delays in the detection of high-risk pregnancies, infections, and chronic diseases.
These populations are disproportionately affected by geographic isolation and limited infrastructure and are affected by socioeconomic marginalization. For example, maternal mortality rates in rural Peru are up to three times higher than in urban areas, often due to late detection of obstetric complications.
Rural LifeScan brings timely tele-ultrasound for all, empowering local workers with the tools and training to acquire ultrasound images without requiring on-site specialists. This enables imaging diagnosis at the point of care—unlocking timely treatment, reducing unnecessary referrals, and ultimately saving lives.
By making early imaging diagnosis accessible, the solution strengthens decision-making at the frontline and ensures that critical health conditions are identified before they become life-threatening, resulting in healthier communities, improved outcomes, and renewed trust in local health systems.
