What specific problem are you solving?
We make the measurement and reporting of blue carbon activities operational, cost-effective, independent and consistent across interventions and solutions. Coastal ecosystems such as sea-grass meadows and mangroves play a crucial role in carbon sequestration, helping mitigate climate change. Conservation and restoration efforts lead to additional atmospheric CO2 removal and carbon sequestration. But, methods to quantify this removal are often insufficient, they fail to capture the significant contribution of ocean carbon export to the sequestration potential of blue carbon, they are difficult to compare across interventions, and they cannot cost-effectively scale. This leads to a lack of scaling of blue carbon solution, challenges to access carbon credit and co-benefit markets, and significant financial waste from blue carbon developers outside of their core value proposition and expertise.
What is your solution?
We deploy ocean digital twins (ODT) based on next-gen ocean modeling and monitoring at and around blue carbon interventions. The ODT mechanistically resolves the ocean physical and biogeochemical processes in the ocean, and couples with the intervention to identify its additional and attributable contribution to the ocean environment. By producing real-time ocean conditions in 3D, the ODT delivers actionable information the enables calculating carbon removal and sequestration, optimizing growth and yield, quantifying co-benefits to ecosystem health, quantifying risks and impacts on other ocean-based activities. Our ODTs are powered by a new generation of ocean simulation codes that mechanistically resolve ocean processes using GPU-based computing, offering a 100x speed up over legacy ocean modeling academic codes. Our ODTs are continuously informed and validated by real-time monitoring data, can be deployed on demand anywhere in the ocean, and at any scale, from 1m to 1000km.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Coastal communities, particularly those in less developed countries, rely heavily on marine ecosystems for their livelihoods and protection against natural hazards. They face significant challenges due to the degradation of coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrasses, and salt marshes, which are crucial for carbon sequestration, food security, and shoreline protection.
Local blue carbon projects today cannot readily access carbon credit markets or sell carbon credits at the same market price as technology-based solutions such as Direct Air Capture, Enhanced Rock Weathering, or even Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement. Our solution makes carbon and co-benefit crediting far more accessible, brings blue carbon credits to the same level of certifiability as Direct Air Capture credits.
