What specific problem are you solving?
Access to high-quality civic education remains a critical gap in Colombia, particularly for children in underserved communities affected by poverty, conflict, and migration. Despite efforts to build a culture of peace, many children lack understanding of their rights and responsibilities, hindering their active participation in society. The situation is exacerbated by the presence of nearly 2.8 million Venezuelan migrants in Colombia as of July 2024, with over 190,000 irregular migrants in transit, 21% of whom are minors. This influx strains the education system, leaving many migrant children without access to consistent civic education. Simultaneously, armed groups have expanded their territorial control, with the Clan del Golfo increasing its presence by 55% and ELN by 23% compared to 2022. These groups often operate in areas with limited state presence, further disrupting educational opportunities. The lack of flexible, context-sensitive civic education resources accessible to both formal and non-formal educators hampers efforts to scale solutions. Without addressing these challenges, a generation of children risks being excluded from becoming informed, engaged citizens capable of contributing to peaceful and inclusive societies.
What is your solution?
La Aldea is a transmedia educational strategy that strengthens civic and socio-emotional skills among children, caregivers, and educators in Colombia. Built around a universe of animal characters inspired by Latin American archetypes, it addresses themes like human rights, migration, and coexistence through stories that spark reflection and action. Its latest innovation is an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot that complements, rather than replaces, human educators. Using a human-in-the-loop model, it adapts content to users’ needs and alerts a trained team when human judgment is needed. This chatbot expands an ecosystem that includes books, radio, games, videos, and songs, delivering education across connectivity levels and learning styles. The focus is always on learning outcomes, not digital inputs. To date, more than 150,000 children and 5,000 teachers in Colombia and Mexico have engaged with La Aldea. By combining deep pedagogical design with accessible technology, it ensures that technology supports, but never supplants, the relationships at the heart of meaningful learning. Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
La Aldea serves children, educators, and families in Colombia's underserved communities, particularly those affected by poverty, migration, conflict, and limited access to quality education. These populations often reside in rural or marginalized urban areas where educational resources are scarce, and schools face challenges such as overcrowding and insufficient training in civic education. For children, La Aldea offers engaging, contextually relevant content that fosters critical thinking, civic awareness, and socio-emotional skills. Its multi-platform approach—including print materials, radio programs, and an AI-powered WhatsApp chatbot—ensures accessibility regardless of connectivity or school enrollment status. Educators benefit from La Aldea's alignment with national educational standards, receiving training and resources that enhance their ability to teach civic concepts effectively. This support is crucial in areas where teachers often work in isolation without adequate materials or professional development opportunities. Families are empowered to participate in their children's learning journeys, strengthening community bonds and promoting a culture of active citizenship. By addressing the educational needs of these groups, La Aldea not only improves individual outcomes but also contributes to the development of more inclusive and resilient communities across Colombia.
