What specific problem are you solving?
The Rubi AI XR Child Mental Health, Wellness and Resilience Program addresses the urgent need for accessible, effective mental health care for children and adolescents facing trauma, stress, and emotional dysregulation. Globally, one in seven adolescents aged 10–19 experiences a mental disorder, accounting for an estimated 86 million young people and representing 13% of the total global disease burden in this age group, with depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders.
Traditional treatments are often inaccessible due to provider shortages, high costs, stigma, and geographic barriers. Rubi AI XR uses extended reality (XR) and generative AI to deliver evidence-based, personalized therapy experiences that do not require a live therapist. The platform integrates Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Solution-Focused Therapy, and Distraction Therapy to help children process trauma, learn self-regulation skills, and build emotional resilience.
Designed for mobile use across a variety of devices, Rubi AI XR adapts in real time to a child’s emotional and physiological responses, ensuring safe, age-appropriate interventions. By reducing anxiety, improving emotional coping, and promoting well-being, Rubi AI XR has the potential to transform youth mental health outcomes at scale.
What is your solution?
The Rubi AI XR is an immersive therapy experience that uses virtual/extended reality (VR/XR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to support the mental health of children and adolescents. Designed for use in schools, clinics, and community centers, Rubi delivers interactive, evidence-based therapy sessions through lightweight, low cost XR headsets paired with mobile devices.
Children enter calming, animated virtual environments where they are guided by an AI-powered user interface. The AI delivers content in a friendly, conversational style, using proven techniques like EMDR, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Distraction Therapy. The system adapts in real time to the child’s voice and feedback, creating personalized experiences that help children process emotions, build coping skills, and improve emotional regulation.
Rubi is designed to work offline and on low-cost devices, making it ideal for low-resource settings. It doesn’t require a therapist to be present, which allows for scalable, consistent, and private care. The experience feels like a guided story or game, making therapy approachable and engaging for kids.
This solution gives children immediate, effective mental health support—anytime, anywhere.
Who does your solution serve, and in what ways will the solution impact their lives?
Our program serves vulnerable children and adolescents in Uganda, in partnership with CDC Uganda, a community-based organization dedicated to improving child health and development. Many of these youth have experienced trauma, violence, displacement, or the effects of extreme poverty. According to Community Development Centre Uganda (CDC.ngo), over 70% of children in the communities they serve show signs of emotional distress, yet access to mental health support is virtually nonexistent due to stigma, cost, and a severe shortage of trained professionals.
Rubi AI XR addresses these challenges by delivering culturally relevant, extended reality (XR) therapy powered by artificial intelligence. Using low-cost headsets and mobile devices, children access immersive therapy approaches guided by AI prompted questions. These sessions integrate evidence-based techniques to support healing, teach emotional regulation, and promote resilience.
The program is designed for use in schools, clinics, shelters, and community centers, even in areas without consistent internet or electricity. By collaborating with CDC Uganda’s established community network, Rubi ensures that children who are most in need can access safe, private, and engaging mental health support. This solution empowers a new generation to thrive emotionally, socially, and academically.
