Dr. Björn Haßler

Björn is an advocate for international cooperation and development, Global Public Goods, open development practices, Open Access and Open Education, and their role in global equity. He specialises in sustainable and scalable approaches for programme implementation to improve educational outcomes — across primary, secondary and higher education. His research interests include digital technology (for education and research), teacher professional development, education systems research and equity/inclusion and work-based learning, and the role of multi-loop reflective learning for effective research designs and programming.

As the Director of Open Development & Education (https://opendeved.net), Björn has engaged with clients and partners across sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and the Caribbean. Key projects have include driving the development of Jordan’s EdTech strategy (Activating EdTech), a two-year study of TVET research in sub-Saharan Africa, and the development, trialling, and scaling of a distributed TPD model to address learning loss in the Caribbean (OECS Academic Recovery Programme).

Björn is also a founding director at the EdTech Hub (https://edtechhub.org), a world-leading research hub generating and promoting evidence around effective use of technology in the classroom, and is a visiting researcher at the Faculty of Education, University of Johannesburg.
