Dr. Gabriella Carolini is an associate professor of international development and urban planning in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where she leads the Infrastructure Equity Lab. Her research and teaching at MIT interrogate how the governance of the financial architecture behind infrastructure projects, particularly in the water and sanitation sector, shapes the distributional fairness of project benefits and the health of urban communities. Professor Carolini’s research focuses on urban and peri-urban landscapes across Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America, but increasingly also North America. She has worked with various international and philanthropic organizations, including UN-FPA, UN-HABITAT, UNECA, ECLAC and the Rockefeller Foundation. Her work has been published in leading planning, development, and public health journals, such as the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, Urban Studies, Environment and Planning C, Journal of Planning Education and Research, The Lancet, and the American Journal of Public Health.
