MIT Solve is a marketplace for social impact: we find entrepreneurs from around the world and broker partnerships across our community to scale their innovative work—driving lasting, transformational change. 

In addition to our annual Global Challenges, Solve offers the opportunity for partners to design, launch, and run their own custom challenge on Solve’s award-winning open innovation platform. Our team will work with you to understand your organization’s social and environmental impact objectives and design an innovation challenge tailored to meet your goals through our proven methodology, global community, and user-friendly platform with more than 114,000 active registered users.

Solve’s Open Innovation Platform

Solve’s award-winning open innovation platform was designed based on 10 years of research conducted by the MIT Climate CoLab, a project of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, which studies how people and computers can be connected so they can collectively act more intelligently than any one person, group, or computer.

Innovators and entrepreneurs, wherever they are in the world, can submit their solution to challenges hosted on Solve’s platform. The user-friendly interface encourages mass user participation in the form of community commenting, voting, and editing solutions. In addition, all judging is completed on the platform. Solutions are assigned to specific judges, who are able to review and evaluate each solution through an easy-to-use dashboard.

The Solve Community

Partner organizations that launch challenges with Solve have access to our global community of innovative Solver teams as well as Members and partners from the public, private, nonprofit, and academic sectors. We’ll leverage our community to support your challenge from start to finish, from challenge crowdsourcing and promotion to workshops, judging, events, and more. We have over 144,000 email newsletter subscribers and 114,000 platform users which can be immediately accessed for challenge promotion.

Every partner that launches challenges with Solve has the opportunity to connect with our broader community by hosting Solveathon and Challenge Design workshops—design-thinking workshops led by experienced Solve facilitators—and attend our annual flagship events: Solve Challenge Finals and Solve at MIT, which convene 400-500 social impact leaders, technologists, executives, and industry experts around Solve’s mission.

Case Studies

World Bank ID4D Mission Billion Challenge

Identification for Development (ID4D), an initiative of the World Bank, used Solve’s platform and methodology to launch the Mission Billion Challenge powered by MIT Solve. The Mission Billion Challenge is an open innovation challenge to identify practical and cost-effective ‘privacy by design’ features that can be embedded into digital identification systems in developing countries. In its first year, the Mission Billion Challenge received 175 solution submissions from 56 countries and a total of $100,000 in prize funding was distributed across the challenge winners.

Mohammed Bin Rashid Initiative for Global Prosperity Global Maker Challenges

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Initiative for Global Prosperity partnered with Solve and eight UN agencies to launch the Global Maker Challenges, four challenges that offered an opportunity for makers and innovators to solve real-world problems using advanced manufacturing technologies. The challenges addressed the following topics: Sustainable Energy, Rural Transformation and Zero Hunger, Digital Divide and Digital Literacy, and Sustainable Cities. In year one, the Global Maker Challenges received over 1,100 solution submissions and the winners and finalists received a total of $520,000 in prize funding.
