Meet the Solver Teams: Introducing the Sustainable Food Systems Solver Class

On February 25, 2020, Solve launched the Sustainable Food Systems Challenge which asked innovators around the world, how can we produce and consume low-carbon, resilient, and nutritious food? The 539 solutions we received demonstrated a passion for transforming the global food system to mitigate the effects of climate change and minimize environmental impact. These solutions came from all corners of the world and targeted every aspect of the food economy: improving yields, decreasing agriculture emissions, reducing food loss, and promoting low-impact diets.

After closely reviewing these applications, Solve and our Sustainability Food Systems Challenge Leadership Group selected 15 finalists to pitch their solutions in front of the Solve community. On September 29, we heard those pitches at Virtual Solve Challenge Finals, and our expert judges selected seven of the most promising solutions to join the Solve community. We’re thrilled to announce our new Sustainable Food Systems Solver Class:

Bambara Milk

Bambara Milk is a plant-based milk made from the Bambara groundnut—a nutrient-dense and climate-resilient legume—that creates opportunities for small farmers, remediates degraded land, and provides affordable nutrients to malnourished populations.

Beewise

Beewise has developed an autonomous beehive using precision robotics, computer vision, and AI that constantly monitors and responds to bees’ needs, thus reducing the rate of colony collapse and securing global food supplies.

eggXYt

eggXYt uses non-invasive CRISPR-based technology to detect the sex of chicken eggs before they hatch, saving 8 billion male chicks from disposal and increasing the global egg supply.

InsectiPro

InsectiPro farms black soldier flies as an alternative protein source for the feed industry and also produces cricket powder to decrease malnutrition in Africa.

Symbrosia

Symbrosia developed a seaweed feed supplement for livestock that reduces methane emissions (a major contributor to climate change) by over 90%.

Value Rescue for Sustainable Seafood

Value Rescue for Sustainable Seafood partners with small-scale fishers to implement responsible fishery management—giving them access to new markets while providing sustainable and ethical seafood to consumers.

Whole Surplus

Whole Surplus is a digital platform for food businesses to resell, donate, and recycle their unsold surplus inventories, reducing food waste and increasing efficiency.
